Commute to St. Thomas

Thursday, January 31st

There is a first for everything! Doc took the truck over on the barge and we woke up really early so that we could drive in to Cruz Bay and make the 7:00am people ferry over to St. Thomas! When we arrived over on St. Thomas we got to ride on our first open air people taxi (SAFARI)! Something actually very exciting! It is a truck that has seats in the bed of the truck. It only costs $2.00 every time you get off.

All smiles for our first ride!

We were headed to the Nisky Caribbean School to help a UVI student put in a garden at the school. We had to pickaxe every part of the garden about 6-8 inches deep to get out this nasty weed called nutsedge. We would shovel it into a screen and screen out the nutsedge seeds, throw out the bad soil and keep all of the good soil. Once we were done with that project we were able to level out the beds, put fabric in them and start to fill them with good soil. We put a mixture of compost that we brought over, the good soil, and potting soil in the garden beds to fill them up. We planted one of the beds with Tomatoes, Beets, Banana Peppers, Eggplant, and lettuce. The kids will plant the other two beds. After working on this project for 6 hours we were very proud of the end product! We will be visiting again soon to check out the progress on the plants!

We were very proud of the finished product
